When a Film Becomes a Movement

A strong film is only the beginning. At the Good Media Pitch, six projects presented their impact strategies to the very people who can turn them into reality. This is the work that gives a film a second life.

Some arrivals already tell half the story. At the Good Media Lab in March, Sruti came all the way from Goa with the project “Auto Queens,” after managing to secure her visa in time. Ketevan from Tbilisi, working on “9 Months Contract,” fought her way through cancelled and delayed flights to reach the Atelier Gardens. When someone travels that far, they have something to say. And that is exactly what the Good Media Pitch is about.

It was preceded by three intense days at the Lab. Day one was about the theory of impact campaigning: Anna Mago from Fairtrade Austria showed how NGOs run campaigns, Ida from our team explained how social media carries a story, and Emmy Oost from Filmpact brought all the pieces together into a campaign. On day two we sharpened the core messages of the projects. Elwira Niwiera, director of “The Hamlet Syndrome,” told us how she set an entire relief chain for Ukraine in motion through the network she built with her film. Real impact, right there among us. On day three we brought it all together and asked ourselves: do the vision, the goal and the partners fit? Where are the gaps? And then the search for partners began.

The highlight was the pitch on 12 June at the Doxumentale. Six projects presented their strategies to a room full of potential partners from media, business, politics and civil society. The goal: long-term collaboration that carries these stories far beyond the screen. On top of that, the projects could apply for support from the Good Media Fund.

This work, turning a film into a movement, is our core. Impact producing means defining goals, winning partners, planning outreach. Audience development means finding and activating the right audience. And we love doing it with new partners most of all.
